Ensign Richard Sharpe is back in Sharpe's Trafalgar, the 17th in Bernard Cornwell's remarkable series of Sharpe novels. Sharpe is at the thick of things again, but this time not on the battlefield, but on the high seas. The year is 1805 and Sharpe is stuck in Bombay, waiting passage back to England on the Calliope. He soon discovers that his fellow passengers include the aged, patrician Lord William Hale and his "breathtakingly, achingly, untouchably beautiful" young wife, Lady Grace. The scene is set for a romantic but eventful passage, which becomes even more entangled as the Calliope is surprised by the rogue French warship the Revenant. The ensuing maritime adventures sail Sharpe right into one of the most momentous naval battles of all time, off Cape Trafalgar, on the 21st of October 1805, as the massed fleets of Spain and France face the might of Admiral Horatio Nelson's English navy. Sharpe's Trafalgar is one of Cornwell's most ambitious Sharpe novels to date. Filled with the Cornwell trademarks of heroism, graphic violence, romance and vivid evocation of the period, its portrayal of Sharpe at sea is convincingly done and Sharpe's encounter with Nelson himself, alongside his previous encounters with historical figures such as Wellington, is particularly effective, the frail Admiral characterised as asking "nothing from life except to be seated with his good friends Chase, Blackwood and Richard Sharpe".  £10.00

Greek traders dominate the Eastern Mediterranean, from Italy and Carthage in the west to the Levant in the east. The great Alexander is thirteen years dead, and his feuding generals gaze covetously at one another's portions of empire. Amidst mounting tension, the trading city of Rhodes is prosperous - and studiedly neutral. There in Rhodes, Menedemos is a young, daring sea captain; scholarly, reserved Sostratos is his cousin. Their fathers jointly own a merchant galley, the Aphrodite, and they expect Menedemos and Sostratos to use it to enrich their families. But now the cousins plan their largest, most audacious trading voyage yet, which will take them from the shores of Asia Minor all the way to the coasts of faraway Italy, and to confrontations with the barbarians of an obscure town called "Rome." Each of them has strengths the other lacks. Now, in the troubled waters off of Sicily, they face a chance at untold riches...if they can evade the massed strength of the Carthaginian fleet.  £15.00

Is Arnold Schwarzenegger a bizarre construct of the PR industry, or is he the product of late-century Aryan supremacism, on a path which will eventually lead him to the White House? What makes him a freak achiever is not just his origin - the only sportsman ever to become a Hollywood superstar, let alone the only Austrian - but his ability to be several pairs of complete opposites: outlaw and establishment warrior; patrician and peasant; untried android and grizzled human veteran; hero and villain. He is universally popular and in a career spanning cops, robbers, hit man, special agents, macho kindergarten teachers and over-sized twin brother, Arnold has become the biggest hero in the world by playing the biggest hero in the world - all of this was written before he became Governor of California!  £15.00

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was and is an icon for women. Beautiful, exquisitely dressed, cultivated, gracious, a little mysterious and almost regal, she personifies the way we would like all our world leaders' wives to be. Sarah Bradford paints an extraordinary portrait of a woman riddled with contradictions: kind, considerate, proud, loyal and loving, yet also supremely selfish, manipulative and greedy. Drawing on remarkable new testimony from those closest to Jackie, "America's Queen" follows her from her rigid, bleak childhood to the glorious glamour and complication of life as Kennedy's wife, to the even more glamorous but ultimately poisonous marriage to Onassis, to the final serenity of her years as a New York publishing editor. The secrets of Onassis's will, Jackie's affairs, her extraordinary spending habits, her treachery to old friends - all of these are revealed together with her public life as the ultimate trophy wife.  £14.00

Here are the still-vivid impressions of the brave young men who fought in the mud and trenches of no-man's land during World War I. Here are the stories of green American tankers taking on massive and well-armoured German Tigers or fighting through a screaming sea of Red Chinese soldiers in Korea. And here are the personal tales of American tankers defending Western Europe from the threat of Soviet tanks during the Cold War. From the American boys who pitted their tanks against the Viet Cong in the jungles of Southeast Asia to the soldiers who put their lives on the line every day in Iraq, these are the heroes of our time, taking that rare moment to tell us what it is like to face the enemy in tank warfare.  £10.00

Henrietta Maria was only 15 when she left France to marry Charles I. For many of his subjects she was his evil genius, a self-willed, interfering Roman Catholic, capable of ruining them all. For Charles himself she was a delightful consort, as lively as she was unpredictable. Neither of them saw the growing troubles around them but when civil war erupted, Henrietta threw herself wholeheartedly into fighting for the royal cause. She travelled Holland in an attempt to pawn the Crown jewels and even marched at the head of her own army. Her heroic efforts and hair-raising voyages read like an adventure story in their own right.  £7.00

Tells the story of the men and women who conspired to deceive and confound the enemy during World War II. From North Africa to Normandy, from the jungles of South East Asia to the shores of Sicily, a small group of deception planners, aided by experienced soldiers and civilians, turned their attention to outwitting the enemy. A subtle combination of guile, disinformation and illusion was intended to persuade the enemy to commit his men and resources in the wrong place and at the wrong time, by such means as dummy tanks and guns and more sophisticated deception, culminating in the triumph of the D-Day landings.  £6.00
[15316] Ziegler, Philip. Soldiers: Fighting Men's Lives, 1901-2001. London: Chatto and Windus, 2001. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Very Good / Very Good. ISBN: 0-7011-6954-0. An in-depth study of the character and spirit of soldiers. This book takes as its starting point interviews with Chelsea Pensioners whose lives in the army span the 20th century, and who have seen action from World War I to Korea. Author Philip Ziegler is fascinated by the value that war veterans share, which the army must have inculcated in them: self-discipline, acceptance of risk and pain, patriotism, and solidarity with their fellow soldiers. Of course there is sometimes bigotry, narrow-mindedness and even blinkered stupidity. Ziegler also addresses the question of whether army values are still admired in modern British society. Above all though, this book celebrates the lives and attitudes of soldiers and comes to an understanding of the ethos that means so much to them.  £8.00
