[12191] Bradley, Marion Zimmer. Ghostlight. New York: Tor Books, 1995. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good ISBN: 0-312-86218-0. Bradley broadens her range with an entertaining tale of contemporary "magick" and self-discovery that combines gothic romance, urban fantasy and horror. Truth Jourdemayne, parapsychologist and illegitimate child of celebrated vanished occultist Thorne Blackburn, decides to write a book about her much-hated father; to begin her research, she visits his estate, Shadow's Gate, nestled in the Hudson River valley. There Truth meets a group continuing Blackburn's occult "Work," led by the exciting and mysterious Julian Pilgrim. The narrative employs gothic props such as hidden parentage, a secret book, underground passages and intricate alliances, and it isn't shy about flashing occult wonders either, but the emphasis is on Truth's growth toward greater understanding and wisdom. With a strong, though not feminist, heroine and a sophisticated treatment of magick, this novel overcomes myriad cliches?including the charismatic occult leader and an apparently haunted mansion?to offer intelligent, if somewhat giddy, diversion.  £6.00

Vonnegut, who is interviewed in this volume, has said many times and in many ways that humans are always seeking extended families. Author Jeff Greenwald looks into one of the largest artificial families ever created, the legion of Star Trek fans who know each other by secret signs, symbols, and addictions, and who turn out to be one of the most interesting subjects for sociological study ever invented by a major movie studio. Greenwald travels the globe, interviewing Klingon clans from Germany, Trek-heads in an English pub, and dozens of Americans who find fulfilment in the wearing of funny ears. Of extreme interest is the section on the Klingon Language Institute, an actual organization of linguists and scholars who are translating the Bible into Klingon. There's already a splinter group who've decided to do their own Bible translation that will be truer to Klingon culture. There's also a delightfully eclectic assortment of celebrity interviews, some of which are eye-popping. The final chapter, I swear to Kahless, is a talk with an unlikely Trek fan: the Dalai Lama. An engaging read for Trekkers, sociologists, and Buddhists alike. Dustjacket is slightly bumped to edges.  £10.00

[13747] Nicholls, Stan. Quicksilver Rising. London: Voyager, 2003. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Paperback. Good ISBN: 0-00-714149-1. Powerful new epic fantasy trilogy from Stan Nicholls, the British author of the internationally acclaimed ORCS series. The empires of Rintarah and Gath Tampoor are squared against each other, each continually spying for weaknesses in the other. In the middle huddles the small island state of Bhealfa, ruled by a demented Prince who is obsessed with the idea that he can outrun death. Everywhere, magic underpins the social order. Different classes enjoy different qualities of magic; from meagre charms for the destitute, to grand conjurations impossible to distinguish from reality for the rich. But the most skilful and expensive spells are kept by the authorities and used to control the entire population. Reeth Caldason is among the last of his kind. His people, the Qalochians, a race of natural warriors, were brutally massacred decades ago. Reeth is cursed with immortality, forced to wander the world, seeking revenge for his tribe and a cure for his magical affliction. Under the floating Palace of the mad Prince of Bhealfa he comes across other outlaws and is drawn into the Resistance movement, assisting those who have suffered under the dictatorships of the two massive empires. [12163] Sibley, Brian. Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide. London: Harper Collins, 2001. First Edition. Paperback. As New ISBN: 0-00-711908-9. Official Movie Guide. Brian Sibley's straightforward approach takes the reader from the initial conception of the movie as it was developed and passed around studios (it initially started life as a two-hour condensed version of the three novels) to the months of complicated special-effects work necessary to do justice to Tolkien's extraordinary imagination. The book features interviews with all the key cast and production members and is liberally decorated with full-color photographs and behind-the-scenes images from the film itself. Sibley manages to document perfectly the filmmakers' painstaking attention to detail, much of which will be missed by many moviegoers, but he also captures a sense of camaraderie from all involved who wanted to make the best movie possible. If it's facts and background trivia you are after, then this is the best place to be--the perfect starting point for those new to Tolkien or eager to find out more about how epic movies are put together. Dedicated Lord of the Rings fans who have been following the epic moviemaking process via the Internet won't find anything here they didn't already know, but this is still a very good companion no matter what level of knowledge or understanding you have of the greatest work of fantastic fiction ever written.  £12.00
